A propósito del concierto Rompiendo la rutina de la de la Zurich Jazz Orchestra  en el reconocido club Moods con la participación especial del trompetista cubano Yasek Manzano, conversamos con este importante músico cubano, trompetista y compositor. Dotado de un virtuosismo reconocido dentro y fuera de Cuba, Manzano nació en La Habana y es una referencia en el mundo del jazz.

¿Quién es Yasek Manzano?

Yo creo que soy una combinación de muchas cosas y la música y el arte tienen un papel fundamental en la manera en que vivo mi vida. Lo digo desde el plano de la creatividad, desde la libertad, el crecimiento espiritual y en el plano de esa búsqueda constante.

Yo creo que Yasek Manzano es el avatar de un espíritu que está en búsqueda constantemente, procesando información y devolviéndola de una manera muy personal, de una manera muy particular, de una manera muy individual también, siempre con la intención de compartir y de conectar con otros artistas, con el público, con la naturaleza. Y, por supuesto, más que nada, conmigo mismo.

¿Por qué la trompeta?

La trompeta es solo una herramienta, un instrumento vigoroso, muy conectado a la historia de mi país y por supuesto está conectado a mi identidad como caribeño, cubano y muy conectado a la historia de todos los grandes trompetistas que han compartido escenas, de los que han surgido en mi país y de esos grandes que han llegado por información a través de discos.

La primera vez que escuché una trompeta que me estremeció, que me hizo desear hacer lo mismo como trompetista fue escuchando a Maynard Ferguson, luego de eso escuché Dizzy Gillespie, Arturo Sandoval. Fui conociendo a otros como Woody Shaw, Freddie Hubbard…

Cuando conocí al trompetista Bobby Carcassés, El Showman de Cuba, me introdujo dentro del jazz. Digamos que él ha sido mi descubridor en ese sentido. La trompeta es un instrumento que necesita aire y el aire es algo que viene, es el aliento. La trompeta tiene mucha simbología en la religión, en varias religiones, y es un instrumento que tiene esa característica por ser tan vigoroso. Siempre está estableciendo un llamado y el viento está implícito, es decir, es un elemento importante de la naturaleza y también simboliza un poco el alma.

La trompeta es un instrumento con el cual puedes desarrollar sonoridades muy diversas y puedes establecer muchos colores como espejos de ti mismo, a través de la expresión, de la improvisación, de la interpretación.

A mi me atraen los instrumentos de viento metal y hace dos años que estoy estudiando y tocando trombón, ya es parte de mi show el trombón clásico. Estoy estudiando tubas, corno francés… Todos los instrumentos de aliento para mi son fundamentales y busco otras sonoridades más oscuras como los instrumentos de viento metal graves.

Yo soy seguidor de muchos trombonistas, tuve la suerte también de tocar con Steve Turre; con el proyecto del Latin Jazz Hostal del maestro Orlando Valle, “Maraca”. Ese instrumento me fascinó y ahora pienso crear mi propia sonoridad y estoy estudiando seriamente para lograr tocar profesionalmente este instrumento.

¿Cómo sentiste la inclusión en este proyecto del Orquesta Jazz de Zurich?

Yo creo que es el factor de lo que pudo haber faltado. Es algo que yo pongo implícito en la manera en que puede desarrollar y crecer este proyecto. Por eso no veo carencia alguna en el repertorio que tocamos y la manera en que ellos abordaron nuestra música y la música brasileña también, que está implícita entre los arreglos que se presentaron. Creo que sí, podría decir, más que faltar, implementar o agregar algo serían partes de mis composiciones personales, con mi estilo cubano, dentro de las próximas presentaciones con la big band que parece que pueden ser muy posibles. Ya tengo la convocatoria para las próximas oportunidades y estoy contento por esa oportunidad, muy agradecido por lo que sucedió, por la invitación.

Ya hay proyectos, se está hablando informalmente de hacer arreglos de big band en mis propias composiciones y eso sería genial porque ya yo tengo mi sonoridad y creo que podría aportar algo también dentro del repertorio de esta emblemática orquesta de Jazz de Zurich. Creo que hicieron un excelente trabajo con la música cubana se sintió el sabor, se sintió además el músico que está muy entrenado por nuestros propios profesionales y artistas tanto profesionales como de la calle que eso es muy importante decirlo. Son músicos con un talento extraordinario con una capacidad increíble de interpretación en cualquier estilo y demostraron que pueden tocar la música cubana muy bien y eso es algo que se ve en los músicos también de la big band.

Creo que se puede incluir repertorios más complejos, más concretos, en la dirección del jazz contemporáneo cubano, porque se tocaron más estándares y clásicos de grandes compositores como el mismo Arturo, pero sería muy lindo también eso. Creo que hay una mentalidad muy abierta en ese sentido y hay un swing tremendo y muy buena vibra con la música cubana y hay una muy buena energía entre los mismos músicos. Se nota que es una orquesta que está establecida en el nivel profesional, pero también en el nivel de familia, son toda una familia y me sentí como invitado a la casa y eso para mí es un recuerdo que voy a guardar siempre y es un sueño también que he podido realizar y poder tocar con esta orquesta, con este alto nivel aquí en Suiza, estoy súper feliz por eso.

¿Es la primera vez que tocabas en el Moods?

Esta es la tercera vez que toco. La primera vez había tocado, creo que por casualidad, no sé si en un jam session o fue la segunda pero hice un concierto oficial con César Correa, un pianista excepcional también peruano, radicado aquí en Suiza.

Yasek Manzano: “I Am a Spirit in Constant Search”

On the occasion of the concert Breaking the Routine by the Zurich Jazz Orchestra at the renowned Moods club, featuring special guest Cuban trumpeter Yasek Manzano, we spoke with this important Cuban musician, trumpeter, and composer. Endowed with virtuosity recognized both inside and outside Cuba, Manzano was born in Havana and is a reference in the world of jazz.

Who is Yasek Manzano?

I think I am a combination of many things, and music and art play a fundamental role in the way I live my life. I say this from the perspective of creativity, freedom, spiritual growth, and that constant search.

I believe Yasek Manzano is the avatar of a spirit that is constantly searching, processing information and giving it back in a very personal, very particular, very individual way—always with the intention of sharing and connecting with other artists, with the audience, with nature. And, above all, with myself.

Why the trumpet?

The trumpet is just a tool, a powerful instrument, deeply connected to the history of my country and, of course, to my identity as a Caribbean, as a Cuban. It is also strongly tied to the history of all the great trumpeters who have shared stages—those who emerged in my country and those great ones I discovered through recordings.

The first time I heard a trumpet that moved me, that made me want to do the same as a trumpeter, was when I listened to Maynard Ferguson. After that, I listened to Dizzy Gillespie, Arturo Sandoval. I kept discovering others like Woody Shaw, Freddie Hubbard…

When I met the trumpeter Bobby Carcassés, the Showman of Cuba, he introduced me to jazz. Let’s say he was my discoverer in that sense. The trumpet is an instrument that needs air, and air is something that comes—it is breath. The trumpet has a lot of symbolism in religion, in several religions, and it has that quality because it is so powerful. It is always making a call, and wind is implicit—it is an important element of nature and also symbolizes the soul.

The trumpet is an instrument through which you can develop very diverse sounds and create many colors as reflections of yourself, through expression, improvisation, and interpretation.

I am attracted to brass wind instruments, and for the past two years I have been studying and playing the trombone—it is now part of my show, the classical trombone. I am studying tubas, French horn… All wind instruments are fundamental to me, and I seek darker sounds such as those of low brass instruments.

I follow many trombonists, and I also had the chance to play with Steve Turre, in the Latin Jazz Hostel project led by maestro Orlando Valle, “Maraca.” That instrument fascinated me, and now I plan to create my own sound. I am seriously studying it in order to play it professionally.

How did you feel about being included in this Zurich Jazz Orchestra project?

I think it is the factor of what might have been missing—something I naturally bring into the way this project can develop and grow. That’s why I don’t see any lack in the repertoire we performed, or in how they approached our music and Brazilian music as well, which was part of the arrangements presented. If anything, rather than something missing, I would add elements from my own compositions, with my Cuban style, in future performances with the big band—which seem very possible. I have already been invited for future opportunities, and I am happy and very grateful for what happened.

There are already projects being discussed informally about arranging my own compositions for big band, and that would be wonderful because I already have my own sound, and I believe I could contribute something to the repertoire of this emblematic Zurich Jazz Orchestra.

I think they did an excellent job with Cuban music—you could feel the flavor. You could also feel that these are musicians who are very well trained by our own professionals and artists, both formally trained and street musicians, which is important to say. They are musicians with extraordinary talent and incredible ability to interpret any style, and they proved they can play Cuban music very well. That is something you also see in the big band musicians.

I think more complex and more specific repertoire could be included, in the direction of contemporary Cuban jazz. What was played leaned more toward standards and classics by great composers like Arturo, but it would also be very nice to expand in that direction. I think there is a very open mindset, a tremendous swing, and great energy with Cuban music. There is also a wonderful energy among the musicians themselves. You can tell it is an orchestra established not only at a professional level but also as a family—they are truly a family. I felt like a guest in their home, and that is something I will always remember. It is also a dream I have fulfilled—to play with this orchestra at such a high level here in Switzerland. I am extremely happy about that.

Was it your first time playing at Moods?

This is the third time I have played there. The first time, I think it was by chance—I’m not sure if it was at a jam session. The second time—or perhaps that was the second—I did an official concert with César Correa, an exceptional Peruvian pianist based here in Switzerland.
